- The "Fork in the Road"
Metaphor Applies - 5/18/2010
Lately, with all the goings-on in the world economy and markets (i.e.
the Flash Crash on May 6th and the $1 T “Hail Mary” Pass to Europe on
the following Sunday and the subsequent 405-point market gain on last
Monday with another 163 point loss on Friday and what was an intra-day
loss market with flat close yesterday) I’m somehow driven to think about
metaphors - the “fork in the road” one, in particular.
- John Mauldlin's Latest: Be Patient and Wait for Pullback, Then Invest - 4/15/2010
Here is John Mauldin again…………And he says it all: Be patient. Wait for a pullback and then invest (for the long-term) in the next bubbles (biotech and emerging markets, he believes). The biggest opportunity will come at the end of the decade and into the 2020s.
- No Bell Will Ring! Go To
Absolute Return Strategies Now! - 3/31/2010
This month marked the 10th anniversary of the NASDAQ’s peak 5,000
performance. In commemoration, my Tech Ticker buddies Henry Blodget and
Aaron Task looked back in this video segment on March 11th and tried to
make some sense of the its mind-boggling 5-year run. And then, over
the next two years, its ultimate collapse.
- This Time Is No Different:
The Devil Is Always In The Details - 2/02/2010
The recent
spate of earnings and GDP reports, along with other economic news should
serve to remind us that this time is no different – the devil is always
in the details.
- "Cold Realities in a New
Market: Playing the Hand We've Been Dealt" - 1/12/2010
“What made
sense in the 80’s and 90’s does not make sense now. What works now
won’t make sense in the 2020’s. But this is where we are today. You
have to play to what the hand’s been dealt.” John Mauldin, December,
2009

I have been talking to my clients a lot about the need to prepare for a downturn and the continuation of a long bear market.
- Can Pictures Be Worth a Thousand Words? - 12/03/2009
Last month I attempted to grab your attention with “Is the Market Like the Titanic?” I got the analogy from an article by Simon Maierhofer, founder of the ETFguide, in which he warned that investors continue to “find themselves in an environment that is infested with symbolic icebergs.”
- Where The Wild Things Are - 12/03/2009
“And when he came to the place where the wild things are, they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.” Sound scary? Today the “wild things” we face in this economy are just as threatening... (Click here for the spreadsheet that accompanies this presentation.)
- Is The Market Like The Titanic? - 10/28/2009
In
this article, “What’s Next – Minor Correction or Major Meltdown?” Simon
Maierhofer, founder of ETFguide.com, masterfully compares the current
market to that of the “unsinkable” Titantic.
- Be Nimble In This Muddle-Through Economy. - 10/21/2009
John
Mauldin is a guy I have been following whose prognosis for the markets
and the economy is in line with my thinking. Please listen to these
two segments from today’s Tech Ticker...
- Don't be fooled by the latest rally... Pull out your oars and prepare for a downturn. - 10/14/2009
Yesterday the DOW closed above the 10,000 mark for the first time in over a year – up 53% from the March 9th lows. Investor sentiment is of course at an all-time high, the recession has “ended” and the likes of private equity Blackstone Group report seeing “more than green shoots” of economic growth (WSJ, October 14th issue) To boot, Intel and J.P. Morgan reported yesterday “better than expected” 3rd quarter earnings.
- All client portfolios need Alternative Investment exposure! - 9/11/2009
Last
month I sent to you a piece I wrote entitled “New Investment Strategies
in A Changing World.” In it, I identified and described a number of
“rowing” investment strategies (vs. “sailing” or “buy and hold”
strategies) which I felt were necessary and applicable additions to
client portfolios in today’s “secular bear” market.

New Investment Strategies In A Changing World - 8/20/2009
In the past, investment advisors have utilized almost exclusively “buy and hold” portfolio strategies comprised of long positions in stocks and bonds. The percentage mix has been dependent upon a client’s risk tolerance and cash needs objective based on a future withdrawal date, such as retirement.
